Professional Societies
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM): A professional society for computer scientists. This organization publishes a number of significant technical publications, sponsors numerous technical conferences, and provides additional services for computing professionals and students.
This association also supports the activities of several "special interest groups" (SIGS) that focus on areas of computer science. Two of these that are of interest are listed below.
ACM Special Interest Group on Symbolic and Algebraic Manipulation (SIGSAM): This special interest group provides members with a forum in which to exchange ideas about the practical and theoretical aspects of algebraic and symbolic mathematical computation. Its scope of interest includes design, analysis and applications of algorithms, data structures, systems and languages.
ACM Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation (SIGACT): The primary mission of this special interest group is to foster and promote the discovery and dissemination of high quality research in the domain of theoretical computer science. The domain of theoretical computer science is interpreted broadly, to include a wide variety of areas. Work in this field is often distinguished by its emphasis on mathematical technique and rigor.
Computing Research Association (CRA): An association of North American academic departments of computer science, computer engineering, and related fields. The mission of this organization is to strengthen research and education in the computing fields, expand opportunities for women and minorities, and improve public and policymaker understanding of the importance of computing and computing research for our society.
European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS): A European professional organization for theoretical computer scientists.
IEEE Computer Society: Part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), this is a professional society for computer engineers and other computing professionals
Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM): This is a professional society for applied mathematicians and computer scientists. Like the others listed above, it publishes significant technical publications, sponsors conferences, and provides additional services to its members.
