Course Objectives:
The university calendar description of this course reads:
Computer Science 203 Introduction to Computers
Computer system fundamentals, personal computer applications software, and computer communications both on campus and using the internet. Students will use personal computers to complete assignments in word processing, spreadsheet analysis, database management and other applications.
Note: This course is not available for credit for Computer Science majors
For most students, this course is a first introduction to using computers. The course is designed to help you become familiar with personal computers and their major applications; and to help you become familiar with the campus computing facilities including access to Internet and a personal web page design. It should provide a basis for using computer as a tool in your studies, your career and your personal life.

The midterm exam will take place on Wednesday, March 8 th, 2000. The final exam will be scheduled by the Registrar during the final examination period.
Labs
The lab work and assignments are considered to be essential components of the course. Completed assignments should be deposited in the appropriate box for your lab section located on the second floor of the Math Sciences building. Remember to put your name, ID number, lab section and your TA's name on any material you hand in.
Assignments
There will be five assignments in this course: Word processing, Spreadsheet, Power Point, Web Page Design and Database. The assignments will be posted on the CPSC 203 L08 web site.

Each assignment is to be submitted before 16:00 on the due date.
Assignments will be marked out of maximum available points. Some asignments will include bonuses.
Late submissions
Assignments which are submitted after the due date will be accepted up to a maximum of three calendar days late. No assignments will be accepted after this grace period. If there are extenuating circumstances which prevent you from submitting an assignment on time, you should contact the instructor of your lecture section before the assignment is due. Please note that TAs are not allowed to extend the deadlines for your assignments.
UCS Account
In order to complete assignments you will need to have the UCS account. You should obtain it at Room 162, Earth Sciences building or from the UCS computing services, 7th floor of the Math Science Building.
Collaboration
Students are encouraged to discuss the assignments and methods of solution with other students. All work that is handed in as a solution to the assignment must be original work of the student. Any student found copying all or part of an assignment from another student or another source without proper acknowledgement of the copyright will be reported to the Dean, who will enforce penalties which will include failing the course and can include expulsion from the faculty and university (see Plagiarism/Cheating/Other Academic Misconduct sections of the university calendar).

If you encounter problems in the lab that your TA can not resolve, or if you want to discuss the operation of the labs, please contact the lab coordinator. You should contact your instructor to discuss lectures, exams and the overall organization of the course. In this course, you are always welcome to ask questions if you don't understand something during the lecture or the lab. You can also always contact your instructor during office hours or any time by e-mail.
